Ranchi: Acting on a tip-off, police on Thursday evening arrested two members of a gang involved in four chain-snatching incidents in the city.Deputy superintendent of police Amar Pandey said on Friday that chain-snatcher Sadam Ansari and jeweller Ramesh Prasad Swarnkar, both residents of the BIT Mesra area, were apprehended. Police seized melted gold valued at Rs 3 lakh and two stolen motorcycles.Pandey said police launched a checking drive at the Namkum railway flyover after receiving information that a criminal was heading towards Namkum. At 5 pm, police spotted Sadam approaching the bridge on a motorcycle and signalled him to stop. He tried to flee, but was caught.The DSP said Sadam and an accomplice had snatched chains from women near Namkum railway station in July, in Bariatu in June, and near Mahendra Singh College in Lalpur and Arsande in Kanke in April.He said the jewellery was sold to Ramesh, who melted it and made new ornaments. Ramesh had paid Sadam Rs 4 lakh so far. The motorcycles were stolen from Patratu police station area in Ramgarh district. Police said the accused had formed an organized chain-snatching gang; raids are on to arrest other members.
