CHENNAI: A special CBI court in Chennai on Thursday sentenced gangster Chhota Rajan to seven years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 55,000 on him for fraudulently obtaining an Indian passport using forged documents and a false identity.The court convicted Rajan under charges of cheating, forgery, cheating by personation and knowingly submitting forged documents to obtain a passport. Chhota Rajan, a former close aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim who later became his rival, is currently lodged in the Tihar Jail in New Delhi, where he is serving a life sentence in another case.The fake passport case was registered by the CBI on March 19, 2002, alleging that Rajan had obtained a passport from the regional passport office in Chennai by posing as “Vijaya Kadam” and submitting forged documents.The investigation found that Rajan had used fabricated documents, including a school transfer certificate, ration card and demand draft, to establish his identity and address. The agency identified his real name as Rajendra alias Nana alias Chhota Rajan, son of Sadashiv and a resident of Mumbai.The CBI said Rajan had impersonated Vijaya Kadam and fraudulently secured the passport by submitting forged proof of age and residence before using the document as genuine.The investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against Rajan on Jan 22, 2004.
