New Delhi: A 13-year-old boy was found unconscious in a waterlogged lane in west Delhi’s Bindapur and later died Friday. His family has alleged that he died because he was electrocuted when he touched an iron pipe near an electricity pole.Kaushal was a Class 8 student of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Janakpuri and lived in Nand Ram Park, Bindapur. Police said information about the boy’s death came from BM Gupta Hospital to the Bindapur police station on Sept 4.The cops said Kaushal’s grandmother, Sridevi, found him unconscious about 50 metres from their home. She alerted his mother, Hemlata, who rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. His body was shifted to DDU Hospital, where a postmortem was conducted Saturday.The family said the boy was walking through the waterlogged lane after heavy rain when a motorcycle passed by, rather close to him. Fearing he would fall, he allegedly grabbed an iron pipe attached to the electricity pole. The family and residents said the pipe emitted an electric shock that killed him. Locals reportedly pulled the boy away using a wooden stick, but he could not be saved.A senior police officer said the exact reason for his death will be established in the postmortem. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding it.Kaushal has a six-year-old sister. His father works at an optical shop in Rama Garden, while his mother is a homemaker.The family alleged that persistent waterlogging and electrical safety issues in the locality contributed to the boy’s death.Residents also claimed that the lane frequently remained waterlogged even after light rainfall and that sewage water accumulated there even when it was not raining. They said that had the lane not been flooded, Kaushal would not have needed to hold the pipe to prevent himself from falling.Police said further action would be taken after the postmortem and completion of the inquiry.
