Dhanbad police, banks tighten checks on mule accounts

Dhanbad: Dhanbad police intensified efforts to curb cybercrime by strengthening bank coordination and vigilance on accounts used by fraud networks. During the cyber safety awareness week, bank managers met police at the Dhanbad Collectorate auditorium on Wednesday.Attended by Rural SP S Mohammad Yakub and officials from Sindri subdivision, the meeting focused on misuse of mule bank accounts, fake SIM cards and stolen mobile phones in cyber fraud. Police urged periodic physical verification of newly opened savings accounts and immediate sharing of suspicious account details with law-enforcement agencies.Yakub said stolen phones, fake SIM cards issued in others’ names and mule accounts have become challenges, and action against these channels could disrupt cybercriminals’ operations.Mule accounts received attention. Banks agreed to call account holders to branches periodically to verify mobile numbers and whether the accounts were genuinely opened by them. Police said people are sometimes lured with money or commissions to open accounts handed to cybercrime networks.Since banks cannot reject legally valid applications, Yakub said physical verification is an important safeguard. Banks were advised to alert police stations, DSPs or senior officers about suspicious accounts. Meetings will follow in Baghmara, Nirsa and other subdivisions to strengthen coordination and detect suspicious transactions early.
