Dhanbad Sadar Hospital reports 542% rise in IPD admissions, 409% jump in surgeries; ICU and CCU upgrades planned

Dhanbad: Sadar Hospital has witnessed a sharp rise in patient turnout, surgeries and infrastructure expansion over the past year, district officials said on Wednesday.Deputy commissioner Aditya Ranjan and deputy development commissioner Sunny Raj attributed the transformation to sustained efforts by the district administration and health department to strengthen facilities, introduce modern equipment and ensure transparent management.According to official data, Indoor Patient Department (IPD) admissions surged by 542%, rising from 696 patients between Jan and May 2025 to 4,466 between June 2025 and March 2026. “All patients were successfully treated and discharged, reflecting improved outcomes and care quality,” officials said. The Outpatient Department (OPD) also recorded a major jump, with footfall increasing from 35,008 to 1,04,702 in the same period — a 199% rise. The monthly average attendance has gone up from around 7,000 to 10,470 patients.Specialised services were significantly expanded. Cataract surgeries were introduced, with 388 procedures performed between June 2025 and March 2026. Orthopaedic surgery services, launched in Oct 2025, have enabled advanced treatment locally. Overall surgeries increased from 47 to 239 — a 409% rise — during the period.Maternal healthcare indicators showed notable improvement, with caesarean deliveries jumping from 162 to 1,100. The Model Nutrition Treatment Centre treated 211 severely malnourished children, compared to just 17 in the earlier period. On the infrastructure front, the hospital added a new registration counter, parking shed, boundary wall and additional buildings. A 12-bed Mother and Newborn Care Unit (MNCU) and a 14-bed Model Malnutrition Treatment Centre have also been set up.Officials said further upgrades are underway, including plans for a world-class infection-free operation theatre, ICU and CCU facilities, along with recruitment of specialist doctors.Beyond the Sadar Hospital, the district is strengthening its healthcare network through model community and primary health centres, training of over 1,000 Sahiyas, and expansion of services at the 200-bed super speciality hospital at SNMMCH.“With these measures, Dhanbad is steadily emerging as a major healthcare hub in the region,” officials said.
