Dhanbad: With the onset of monsoon, reports of aggressive dog behaviour have been reported in several localities in Dhanbad, with residents and students and staff of educational institutions complaining of sleepless nights and safety risks. The situation is worrying at Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH), where stray dogs are said to be creating panic on the campus.Taking note of the issue, SNMMCH principal Dr R K Mehta wrote to the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation (DMC) commissioner, seeking immediate action to protect students, faculty and visitors. In his letter, Dr Mehta said stray dogs often become aggressive and bark at students moving around the campus, creating fear. He noted that their number has increased significantly in recent weeks and urged an effective drive to control their population before any untoward incident occurs.Authorities of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Vinod Nagar, raised similar concerns. Principal Shailendra Sharma informed the civic body that stray dogs on the hostel premises have increased considerably, posing a threat to students. The school administration said the dogs bark throughout the night, disturbing students’ sleep and affecting studies. They also overturn dustbins, scattering garbage and creating unhygienic conditions. The principal requested the corporation to include the school in its stray dog control campaign and remove the animals at the earliest.Though DMC has undertaken sterilisation drives, set up feeding centres and proposed dog shelters, residents alleged the measures have failed to show visible results, with numbers rising in many areas.Complaints from the institutions highlighted the need for a comprehensive and effective strategy, ensuring public safety while following humane animal control measures.
