NEW DELHI: Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi on Monday afternoon, bringing respite from the heat but causing widespread waterlogging and severe traffic disruption across the national capital.ITO Chowk witnessed heavy waterlogging, resulting in massive traffic congestion. Munirka, Badarpur, Sikanderpur Ghosi and Aerocity were among other areas where water accumulation was reported.The downpour also triggered a political war of words, with AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj targeting the BJP-led Delhi government headed by chief minister Rekha Gupta over its handling of waterlogging.Sharing visuals on X showing children wading through waist-high water, Bharadwaj sarcastically thanked the chief minister and the BJP government.“Heartfelt thanks to Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Ji and the BJP government….for arranging free water parks for children in Delhi,” Bharadwaj posted on X.He also shared visuals of waterlogged Sadar Bazar and alleged that rainwater had entered shops, damaging goods and leaving traders helpless.“This scene is from Sadar Bazar, Delhi’s most famous commercial hub. Water has flooded the shops, goods are being ruined, and shopkeepers are left helpless. Ever since the “four-engine government” was formed, the entirety of Delhi has been suffering from severe waterlogging. The grand claims of drain cleaning have been thoroughly exposed. When will the administration wake up from its slumber?” said Bhardwaj.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Delhi would continue to receive light rain in several parts of the city.According to the weather agency, Safdarjung recorded a moderate thunderstorm with rain and a temperature of 25.4°C at 2.30pm, while the Ridge recorded a light thunderstorm with rain and mist, with the temperature at 27.0°C.Delhi had also received light rain in several areas on Sunday morning, bringing cooler weather to the capital. People out for early morning walks at Kartavya Path were seen amid light showers.The IMD said isolated areas of the national capital received light rain, while Safdarjung recorded mist and a temperature of 27°C at 8am. The Ridge recorded a light thunderstorm accompanied by rain and mist, with the temperature at 26°C at 7am.ANI reported that the rain in Delhi came amid widespread showers across several parts of the country on Sunday.Haryana recorded very heavy rainfall ranging between 12 and 20 cm, while heavy showers measuring 7 to 11 cm were recorded in several areas of Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Assam, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Interior Karnataka, according to the IMD.
