Hospital translator jumps off fourth floor after enquiry

Chennai: A 29-year-old translator employed at a private hospital in Aminjikarai was injured badly after she jumped from the fourth floor of the hospital building.The woman, Swetha Ghosh, was a translator at the private hospital on Nelson Manickam Road for the past seven years. She assisted foreign patients by translating medical information, explaining treatment procedures and counselling them on hospital charges.According to the preliminary investigation, a patient from Bangladesh, identified as Kalpana, underwent treatment and delivered a baby at the hospital. Hospital authorities claimed the patient paid ₹10,000 instead of the required ₹2 lakh for treatment after there was a communication failure regarding the charges.Police said Swetha was questioned by the hospital’s administrative department head and two managers — Antony and Balu — for about 30 minutes on the fourth floor regarding the issue. Shortly after the meeting, she jumped from the fourth floor. Hospital staff rushed her to another private hospital, where she has been admitted with critical injuries.
