IHM Ranchi secures copyright for madua laddoo process

Ranchi: The Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) Ranchi has received formal copyright registration for its documented process of making “madua laddoo” (ragi laddoo) under the Copyright Act, 1957, from the Copyright Office, Govt of India, the institute said on Friday.According to IHM, the application for registration was filed on May 16, 2026, and the certificate was issued on July 22, 2026.The product was jointly developed by IHM principal Dr Bhupesh Kumar, senior lecturer Ravi Kumar and lecturer Rajnish Kumar Singh.IHM stated on Friday, “The product is a traditional madua-based delicacy, prepared through a structured, standardised and scientifically documented methodology.”Commenting on the achievement, Dr Kumar said, “Our product is made of only madua, ghee and sugar and has a unique flavour. There is no additive, preservative or blender. The product melts in the mouth as soon as one eats it. The copyright registration of ‘madua laddoo’ work will encourage our faculty members and students to recognise the research and intellectual-property potential of traditional culinary practices.”Madua holds an important place in Jharkhand’s culinary heritage and is valued for its nutritional benefits as well as suitability for cultivation in the state.Experts said scientific development and documentation of madua-based products can help preserve traditional knowledge while creating opportunities in nutrition, entrepreneurship, product development and employment generation across the region and strengthen local food innovation and livelihoods in Jharkhand.
