IIT-Bombay closes lecture halls for overnight use; students voice concerns in campus magazine

Mumbai: After lecture hall complexes were being left unclean and students were leaving behind books, food packets and other belongings, IIT-Bombay decided to shut the complexes for overnight use. Students have raised concerns about the move in the institute’s campus magazine, Insight. They said the move could affect them, particularly with the mid-semester examinations approaching, as the campus has limited study spaces. The article stated: “The overnight arrangement had proven to be an effective solution for a long time, accommodating the nature of the sleep cycle on the campus and catering to students’ needs such as proper study spaces and lack of wi-fi connections in many hostel rooms.”The primary reason cited for the change was the alleged condition in which the rooms were left behind by students after their use. Leaving behind books also raised concerns about security measures during exams, the article stated. The institute offered the use of hostel messes for studies, but as per the report, students claimed it was not feasible.
