CJP Jantar Mantar Protest Updates
A defence spokesperson said Kargil Diwas is celebrated to mark the successful culmination of Operation Vijay in 1999 and to honour the supreme sacrifice of the Indian armed forces’ victory over Pakistan after a nearly three-month-long conflict in the high-altitude terrain of the Kargil district in Ladakh.Initially, with little knowledge of the nature and extent of the infiltration, the Indian troops in the area assumed that the infiltrators were jihadis and declared that they would evict them within a few days. “The subsequent discovery of infiltration elsewhere along the LOC, along with the difference in tactics employed by the infiltrators, caused the Indian army to realise that the plan of attack was on a much bigger scale. The total area seized by the ingress is generally accepted to be between 130 km2 and 200 km2. The Govt of India responded with Operation Vijay, a mobilisation of 200,000 Indian troops. In the war, 527 Indian soldiers lost their lives,” said the army officials.
