Malda woman dies by suicide, family blames Annapurna payment delay

Kolkata: A 32-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide at Bachahar village under Karkach gram panchayat in Malda’s Gazole on Saturday, with her family alleging that financial distress over irregular payments under the state govt’s Annapurna Yojana contributed to her death.Anita Khatun lived with her husband, Inzamamul Haque, a daily-wage worker, and their two children, aged 10 and six.According to her family, Inzamamul’s earnings were insufficient to support the household. Financial assistance Anita received under the previous Trinamool govt’s Lakshmir Bhandar scheme had helped sustain the family. After the BJP came to govt, she applied for Annapurna Yojana. The family said she received the monthly allowance once, but payments then became irregular. She had not received any money for the past two months, they alleged. They said Anita approached the local panchayat and block offices but could not get the issue resolved. On Saturday morning, after Inzamamul left for work and the children went to school, Anita allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling of the verandah using a scarf. Her husband found her after returning home.Gazole police registered an unnatural death case and sent the body for post-mortem. Local Trinamool functionary Mosarekul Rahman alleged that the delay in receiving the promised funds had pushed Anita to take the extreme step.
