Man surrenders after killing wife with tawa

New Delhi: A 48-year-old man walked into a police station in southwest Delhi on Sunday morning and allegedly confessed to killing his wife with a tawa. The accused, who told cops that he has been undergoing treatment for schizophrenia, has been detained and booked for murder.According to police, the man, a resident of Najafgarh, arrived at Baba Haridass Nagar police station and told the duty officer that he had killed his 43-year-old wife, following a late-night argument.During preliminary questioning, the accused told investigators that he has been receiving treatment for schizophrenia at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for around three years. “We are verifying this claim by collecting the necessary medical records. We are also checking whether he has stopped taking his medication,” an officer said.Police said the couple had been married since 2005 and have two sons. The woman was employed at a private company. Their elder son is preparing for engineering entrance examinations, while their younger son is a Class V student. Earlier, the accused worked at an IT company, but had reportedly been unemployed for the last two months.Investigators said the accused was allegedly distressed over the family’s circumstances and frequently argued with his wife over minor issues. During questioning, he allegedly disclosed that they had another argument on Saturday night and, in a fit of anger, he struck her on the head with a tawa, resulting in her death.“Prima facie, we suspect that he killed her between 1am and 2am, remained in the house with the body the whole night, and then went to the police station around 8am. His sons were at their maternal grandmother’s house at the time of the incident,” a senior officer said.Police also learnt that the woman’s family lives in the same locality.Following the confession, a police team rushed to the couple’s residence, where the woman’s body was found. A case has been registered under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.Police said further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events leading to the killing and ascertain all the circumstances surrounding the incident.
