Teen killed in hit and run in Shalimar Bagh, CM blames encroachments

New Delhi: A 15-year-old boy died after a tempo allegedly collided with a motorcycle in northwest Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh on Saturday. The tempo driver allegedly abandoned his vehicle and fled. Chief minister Rekha Gupta later held roadside encroachments responsible for the incident.The boy was on the bike with a friend, also a minor, police said. The victim lived with his parents in a jhuggi in Haiderpur’s Ambedkar Nagar. He was not wearing a helmet, DCP (northwest) Akanksha Yadav said. A case has been registered.Expressing grief over the death, CM, who represents the area in the assembly, blamed roadside encroachments for worsening traffic conditions and increasing accident risks. Encroachments disrupt traffic movement despite infrastructure upgrades, she said, adding that a similar incident had claimed the life of a five-year-old earlier.Citing a recent order of Delhi High Court, Gupta said over 140 illegal constructions on Road no. 320 would be removed. An underpass from Azadpur to Outer Ring Road near Mukarba Chowk had failed to ease congestion due to these encroachments, she added.In another incident, an auto driver was injured while three passengers escaped unhurt after a car allegedly rammed the three-wheeler in east Delhi’s Shakarpur.
