Tenughat dam opens 3 gates, riverbank residents put on alert

Bokaro: Tenughat Dam authorities on Tuesday increased water discharge from the reservoir, opening three radial gates and putting people living along the Damodar River on alert. The executive engineer’s office said the gates were opened at 1 pm, releasing nearly 8,000 cusecs (226.53 cumecs) of water into the river. One under-sluice gate is also operational.A Tenughat official said, “The reservoir water level had reached 850.50 feet and was continuing to rise, necessitating the controlled release of water. Additional gates could be opened if the inflow increases further.”The district administration, police, disaster management authorities and other concerned departments have been informed and asked to remain prepared for any emergency. Residents along the riverbanks have been advised to stay away from the river, avoid unnecessary movement near the water, and strictly follow official safety advisories until the situation normalises, officials said, as monitoring of inflows continues at the reservoir.
