Patna: Bihar Police are probing a series of extortion threats issued in the name of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang after former MLAs, a doctor, an elected representative and businessmen received threatening calls and messages on social media demanding huge sums of money. Multiple FIRs have been registered, and investigators are examining whether the incidents are linked to a single cyber extortion network.The latest complaint was lodged by former BJP MLA from Bisfi and the party’s newly appointed state vice-president, Haribhushan Thakur Bachol. In his complaint to Patliputra police station, Bachol alleged that on the night of July 25, he received repeated calls from an unknown number while at his residence in Patna.

The caller allegedly abused him and threatened to kill him. Bachol said a Truecaller search displayed the name “Md Imanul”. Patliputra SHO Atulesh Kumar said an FIR has been registered and cyber experts are assisting in the investigation.In another case, former RJD MLA from Parbatta and doctor Sanjeev Kumar lodged a complaint at Kankarbagh police station after receiving a message on social media on July 24. The sender, claiming links to the “Bishnoi Gang”, allegedly demanded Rs1 crore and threatened him and his family. Dr Sanjeev said he received an automated AI-generated reply after responding and suspected the account was fake. He has sought a technical probe and security cover.Muzaffarpur has reported at least three similar cases in four days. Zila Parishad member Rajesh Kumar Sahani alleged he received a message demanding Rs1 crore and threatening kidnapping and murder. Another businessman received a demand for Rs50 lakh, while police sources said a block development officer also received a similar message but has not yet lodged a complaint.Sahebganj SHO Sunil Kumar said investigators are examining numbers, chat records, IP details and other digital evidence to determine whether the recent threats are part of an organised cyber extortion racket operating across states.
