Patna: Two minor boys drowned in a water-filled pit in Muzaffarpur’s Aurai area on Sunday, while a third was undergoing treatment at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH).The three boys had gone to bathe in the pit, around 500 metres from their village, and apparently did not realise how deep it was. The incident took place in Bedaul village under Janar panchayat in Aurai police station area.Janar panchayat mukhiya Sangeeta Devi said the boys had gone to the pit while playing. “One by one, all three got trapped in the deep water,” she said.People working in nearby fields noticed the children and raised an alarm. Villagers rushed to the spot and pulled all three out of the water. They were taken to the SKMCH, where doctors declared two of them dead.The deceased were identified as Kaush Kumar, 12, son of Ravindra Rai, and Satyam Kumar, 9, son of Surendra Rai. Ramanand Rai, 13, son of Devendra Rai, is undergoing treatment at the SKMCH.Sangeeta alleged that soil had been excavated from govt fallow land in Pitaojhia border area, leaving behind a deep pit that later filled with rainwater. Villagers claimed the land was in the possession of a local resident who had allegedly allowed a brick-kiln operator to excavate soil there.The mukhiya demanded an administrative inquiry and said action should be taken if illegal mining was established.“After rainwater collects in such deep pits, the danger for children increases. The administration should identify such places and make them safe so that such incidents do not happen again,” she said.Aurai police station sub-inspector Manoj Kumar said the bodies were handed over to the families after postmortem at the SKMCH.He said the villagers’ allegations would be investigated if a formal complaint was filed.
