Dumka: A 23-year-old undertrial prisoner was hospitalised after being bitten by a venomous snake on the Rajmahal Sub-Divisional Jail premises in Sahibganj district on Wednesday.The inmate, identified as Sohan Kumar Yadav, a resident of the Barharwa police station limits, was rushed to the Rajmahal Sub-divisional Hospital shortly after the incident. Doctors said his condition is stable and under observation.Yadav, who was brought to the jail a few days ago in a case of theft, was engaged in routine work along with other inmates inside the prison campus when a snake emerged from nearby bushes and bit him on the foot. The incident sparked panic among others as Yadav’s health began to deteriorate.Dr Saurabh Kumar, who is overseeing the treatment, said the prisoner was brought to the hospital immediately. “He was administered the necessary medication and is being kept under continuous medical observation. His vital parameters are stable at present,” the doctor said.Following the incident, the jail administration on Thursday said it has initiated a review of safety measures and maintenance within the premises. Jail superintendent Bimal Soren said, “Steps would be taken soon to improve sanitation, clear vegetation and strengthen preventive measures to prevent similar incidents in future.”
