Daltonganj: Man accused of injuring two in firing shot during escape bid

Daltonganj: A 29-year-old man accused of opening fire at a public place and injuring two people was shot by police while allegedly trying to escape custody in the early hours of Thursday.The accused, identified as Sumit Chandravanshi of Bhatti Mohalla in Nawahata, suffered a bullet injury below his right knee. He was admitted to the prisoner ward of Medinirai Medical College and Hospital (MMCH), where his condition was stated to be stable.On the evening of July 29, Chandravanshi allegedly opened fire at a popular spot on the banks of the Koyel river, dotted with food carts and seating areas. A bullet struck a bystander, while shrapnel injured another person.“Chandravanshi was arrested late on Wednesday,” Sadar sub-divisional police officer Rajesh Yadav said.During interrogation, Chandravanshi allegedly revealed that he had hidden the firearm at a spot in Bajraha. A four-member police team took him there and recovered a six-round firearm loaded with two live cartridges from beneath a tree.Police said that while the team was returning with Chandravanshi, he snatched a service pistol from a policeman and fired two rounds while attempting to flee. The police team retaliated, and a bullet struck him below the right knee.Chandravanshi fell to the ground and lost possession of the pistol, which was subsequently recovered by police.
