Garhwa: A 35-year-old man was trampled to death by an elephant while he was collecting wild mushrooms in Gangudih forest under Ranka police station limits of the district on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Ramsakal Manjhi, a resident of Gangudih village, police said.Ramsakal’s family members said had gone to collect mushrooms from the forest. Family members went looking for him when Ramsakal did not return after a while and found his body in the forest. A team led by Saifullah Ansari, sub-inspector at Ranka police station, recovered Ramsakal’s body and sent it to Garhwa Sadar Hospital for postmortem examination.Divisional forest officer Garhwa (south division) Ebin Benny Abraham said, “A sum of Rs 50,000 has been paid to the deceased family as a partial payment of the compensation. The elephant has moved towards Sidey village. The forest department personnel are trying to track the elephant.”
