CBI court sentences two railway officers to 3 years in jail for bribery

Ranchi: A special CBI court on Monday sentenced two former railway officers to three-year rigorous imprisonment in a August 2018 bribery case. It also imposed Rs 10,000 fine on each of the two guilty, who would undergo an additional three months in jail if they defaulted on payment.The convicted officers are former assistant material manager K K Jha and former senior divisional mechanical engineer (SDME) Rajeshwari Singh. Both were posted at Patratu under the East Central Railway (ECR) at the time of incident.According to the CBI, a contractor had lodged a complaint alleging that the officers demanded Rs 62,000 for clearing a bill related to the supply of materials to the railway’s Patratu diesel shed. Rajeshwari Singh allegedly sought Rs 45,000, while K K Jha allegedly demanded Rs 17,000.The CBI laid a trap on August 28, 2018, and caught both the accused red-handed. A case was registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120 of the IPC. Prosecution advocate Khushboo Jaiswal examined 18 witnesses to establish the case against the accused during the trial.
