Aurangabad: Armed criminals allegedly assaulted a jeweller and robbed him of cash and gold ornaments valued at around Rs 17.4 lakh near Police Line Road in Aurangabad on Tuesday night, police said.The incident occurred just a few hundred metres from the district police headquarters, raising concerns over security in the area. An FIR has been registered and an investigation is underway.According to police, the victim, Devendra Prasad Soni, owner of Khushi Jewellers, was returning home at Shahpur locality in Aurangabad after closing his shop when five armed men on two motorcycles intercepted him. The assailants allegedly attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon, leaving him seriously injured.Soni suffered injuries on his face and other parts of the body before the criminals snatched his bag containing around Rs 2.40 lakh in cash and gold ornaments valued at nearly Rs 15 lakh.On being alerted, police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured businessman to a hospital. Doctors said his condition is stable and he is out of danger. Superintendent of police Ambrish Rahul said, “A case has been registered and a special team formed to trace the accused. Raids are being conducted and efforts are on to identify and arrest those involved.”
