63 people rescued after Grant Road building’s staircase collapses in Mumbai

Mumbai: As many as 63 people, who were trapped inside a four-storey residential-cum-commercial Mhada building in Grant Road (E) after the staircase collapsed on Thursday afternoon, were safely rescued by firefighters. No one was hurt in the incident.According to fire brigade officials, the staircase between the ground and first floors of Yusuf building on Kharjeetji Rana Lane suddenly collapsed around 12.45pm, while a part of it was left hanging precariously.“The ground floor has commercial units, while the upper floors have residential units. As the building has a single staircase, residents on the upper floors were stranded. They were rescued from the gallery of the second floor using a turntable ladder and Angus ladder,” said a fire brigade official. Of the 63 persons rescued 46 were men, 12 women and five children.
