Navi Mumbai: Uran police seized heroin worth Rs 2.52 lakh and arrested three people during a raid at Jasai in Uran after receiving information that some youths were consuming drugs behind the Sheetal Parivahan parking lot. The police said the raid was carried out as part of a special campaign against drug dealers and users following complaints from residents. The three arrested were identified as Ravindra Kalyan Shetty, 27, Ganesh Dattu Bhide, 25, and Ganesh Vinay Patil, 19. During the search, police recovered 85 packets of heroin weighing 6.32 grammes from Patil. The international market value of the seized drug was estimated at Rs 2,52,800. A case was registered against the three and they were arrested, informed senior police inspector Hanif Mulani.“When the three were produced in court, they were remanded in police custody for three days,” said Hanif Mulani. The police action came amid reports that the number of people using hashish and ganja was increasing in Uran taluka and that an open drug market was operating in several places in Uran.The report said sales were taking place in large numbers and that school and college students in Uran were most vulnerable to addiction, creating a major health problem. It also said drug users later turned to serious crimes, leading to a law and order problem and posing a challenge for police to stop the drug market.Various social organisations in Uran demanded that the administration take immediate and strict action against people involved in the sale and purchase of narcotics in large quantities in Uran.
