Jamshedpur: Around 25 patients and attendants were stranded for more than 45 minutes on Saturday after a lift at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) stopped midway between the fifth and sixth floorsPatients, children and relatives inside panicked and called for help. Hospital staff and others began rescue efforts, but sources said technicians lost time because the lift keys, kept with home guards, could not be found immediately. The guards took 25 minutes to locate and hand them over.The lift was opened and all occupants were safely brought out. The rescue operation took 45 minutes.MGMMCH has 16 lifts, but 12 are non-functional. A similar incident occurred in June, after which the administration promised corrective measures.Hospital Superintendent Dr Balram Jha said a technical glitch may have caused the snag and an inquiry would determine the cause. He said efforts are underway for a permanent solution.
