State begins demolishing 2 illegal hotels on banks of Ichhamati in Taki

Kolkata: Acting on a Calcutta High Court order, the state administration on Wednesday began demolishing two illegally constructed hotels along the banks of the Ichhamati River in Taki. The Taki Municipality had earlier served demolition notices to the hotel owners following allegations of unauthorized construction.According to sources, drive started around 10 am in the presence of a magistrate, civic officials and a heavy police deployment to prevent any disruption. “The two establishments—Taki City Guest House and Disha Guest House—were built on land belonging to the state irrigation department,” an official said. The demolition follows a PIL, after which a division bench of acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Parthasarathi Chattopadhyay directed the municipal authorities to remove the illegal structures within three weeks and submit a compliance report at the next hearing on July 16.
