Patna: A house-breaking attempt in Nawada took an unusual turn when one of three alleged thieves, Rocky Dom, fell asleep inside the house after tossing a sack containing valuables worth nearly Rs 5 lakh out of a window for a later getaway. His two accomplices fled, leaving him behind. Rocky was arrested on Sunday morning. Police said the sack was recovered before Rocky could leave the premises.The incident took place late Saturday night at the house of Pawan Kumar on Purani Jail Road under Town police station. The FIR was lodged by Pawan’s son, Gaurav Kumar, who was away in Thawe, Gopalganj, at the time. He returned around 5am on Sunday and found Rocky lying on the floor of a room in the back portion of the house.According to Gaurav, Rocky had entered through the back door near the staircase leading to the terrace after breaking it open. Gaurav said his parents were sleeping in the front portion of the house. Rocky had allegedly been accompanied by two others, who fled fearing the family members might have woken up, leaving Rocky behind.“The valuable items packed in the sack, including Rs 8,000 in cash, was recovered outside the window of the house. The thief had thrown it from the window to collect it after getting out of the house,” the SHO said.Gaurav said Rocky told him he had slept on the bed throughout the night before going to the washroom in the morning and then falling asleep on the floor. “I was not at home at the time of the theft attempt. I had gone to Thawe in Gopalganj and returned home in the morning around 5am. When I went inside in the back portion of our house, I saw the thief lying on the floor of a room in pants. He had opened his t-shirt which was lying beside him on the floor.”Gaurav added Rocky claimed he had consumed some drugs, which appeared to be sleeping pills.Town SHO Umashankar said preliminary inquiry suggested Rocky was a house-breaker who had come to a relative’s house in the Town police station area. “The valuables had been gathered but were not taken away. It appears the family woke up before the theft could be completed. The accused may have concealed himself inside the house and later fallen asleep,” he said.The family allegedly assaulted Rocky before police arrived. He was injured and admitted to Nawada Sadar Hospital for treatment.
