Bettiah: A forest guard sustained severe burn injuries after allegedly coming into contact with a live electric wire laid by poachers to trap wild animals in the Ganouli Range of the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) in West Champaran district on Friday. The incident took place when the forest guard on routine night patrol.The injured guard, Rama Yadav of Narayanpur village, is undergoing treatment at the Govt Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Bettiah. After receiving first aid, he was referred to Bagaha sub-divisional hospital and later shifted to GMCH, Bettiah, as his condition remained critical.Paswan said the suspected poachers escaped under the cover of darkness amid the confusion following the accident. “The accused have been identified as Rajkumar Mahto of Laxmipur, and Manoj Mahto and Hari Prasad Mahto of Basahwa Tola, Bhedihari, under Valmikinagar police station limits. Efforts are underway to arrest them,” he said.The incident has once again highlighted the threat posed by illegal electric traps used by poachers inside protected forest areas. The forest department is probing the matter and taking action against those involved.
