Ranchi: Jharkhand has a reason to cherish this year’s Independence Day celebrations even after curtains came down on the event. Dimna Lake, Jamshedpur’s iconic reservoir and lifeline, was among 25 lakes across the country after which spectator galleries were named during the 80th Independence Day celebrations at Delhi’s Red Fort.The recognition brought national attention to a water body that has sustained Jamshedpur for more than eight decades and remains one of the city’s most enduring symbols of planned urban development and water security.Constructed under the Dimna Nala Water Supply Scheme by Tata Steel, the reservoir was built with a storage capacity of around 7,500 million gallons to meet the future water needs of a rapidly expanding industrial city. “Work on the project began in 1940 and was completed in 1944, with water from the lake supplied to Jamshedpur for the first time on April 17, 1944,” the steel major said in a statement.Located at the foothills of the Dalma Hills, Dimna Lake has grown beyond its utility value to become one of Jharkhand’s most recognisable landmarks. Surrounded by forests and natural catchment areas, it serves as an important ecological asset while attracting thousands of visitors, nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts every year.“The honour at the Red Fort has also highlighted Jamshedpur’s long association with sustainable water management. Tata Steel and Tata Steel UISL continue to oversee the maintenance and monitoring of the reservoir, focusing on infrastructure safety, water management and conservation,” it added.
