Patna: The state govt is working on a series of initiatives to develop the state’s natural and forest areas into organised, environment-friendly eco-tourism destinations while maintaining a balance between conservation and tourism development. Environment, forest and climate change department (EFCCD) is focusing on improving basic infrastructure and public amenities for visitors at natural sites, water bodies, hill areas and wildlife zones. Through Bihar Eco-Tourism Development Society (BETDS), the process of selecting a transaction adviser, architect consultant and Programme Management Unit (PMU) for developing eco-tourism destinations is underway.The department has also initiated the process of selecting an agency for branding and strategic promotion of Bihar’s eco-tourism destinations.According to a statement released by EFCCD on Wednesday, “The state is also exploring greater private-sector participation in the development and operation of selected destinations through PPP (public-private partnership) and DBFOT models (design, build, finance, operate, and transfer).”At Bhimbandh in Munger, the process for selecting a private partner for developing the site as an eco-tourism destination is currently underway through a request for proposal (RFP).The department is simultaneously examining possibilities for improving tourist facilities at several other major natural and eco-tourism locations, including Rajgir, Kaimur, Rohtas, Gaya and Valmiki Tiger Reserve, besides forest and reservoir areas across the state.In Rajgir, plans are also being advanced for facilities such as eco-friendly cottages and a cliff walk at nature safari, aimed at offering visitors new experiences while keeping environmental considerations at the centre of development.Officials said the broader objective is to create quality tourism infrastructure without compromising the ecological character of natural areas. The initiatives are also intended to generate employment and livelihood opportunities for local communities by involving them in the tourism economy.
