Ranchi: In a significant push to strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and foster scientific temper among students, the Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC), in collaboration with Bharti Airtel Foundation, on Thursday launched math and science clubs across 173 govt secondary and senior secondary schools in Ranchi district as a pilot project under the National Avishkar Abhiyan.The programme included an orientation on the structure and functioning of the proposed clubs, along with the rollout of standard operating procedures (SOPs). Sessions focused on familiarising teachers with activity-based approaches and practical methods to integrate hands-on learning in mathematics and science classrooms.The initiative seeks to create structured platforms within schools where students can engage in hands-on activities, peer learning, and innovative projects in mathematics and science. Out of nearly 3,000 govt schools in the district, 173 have been selected in the initial phase, with plans for gradual expansion.Rajesh Prasad, director of secondary education, said, “Math and science clubs can play a vital role in making learning more engaging and meaningful for students. By providing opportunities for experimentation and collaborative activities, these clubs will help develop analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and a sustained interest in scientific inquiry among young learners.”Avinav Kumar, state head (quality), JEPC, underlined the pedagogical approach of the programme.“At the primary level, science often appears magical to children. In Classes 6 to 8, the focus shifts to nurturing curiosity and encouraging students to ask questions. By the time they reach Classes 9 to 12, the aim is to enable students to innovate, create, reproduce, and replicate scientific prototypes,” he said.
