New Delhi: Residents of Prem Nagar in northwest Delhi are reportedly facing a shortage of neighbourhood primary school facilities, with a representation alleging that the absence of a municipal primary school is forcing several children to travel to schools outside the locality.According to the representation, there is no municipal primary school in Ward No. 38 despite the area having nearly 2.5 lakh residents and 7,000 to 8,000 children.The issue has reached the authorities, with an education activist seeking urgent intervention. The representation states that efforts to establish a school have been underway for nearly three years, including correspondence over allotment of suitable land, but a final decision is still awaited.It further claims that neighbouring primary schools have certified that several children from Prem Nagar are enrolled with them because of the absence of a school in their locality. An existing govt school with primary classes reportedly has limited seats, leaving many neighbourhood children unable to secure admission.A Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) official said proactive steps were being taken in coordination with other departments to establish the proposed school. “Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has identified a plot measuring approximately 1,100 sq metres, and the matter has been forwarded to the executive engineer (project) to examine its technical feasibility. Subject to the site being found feasible, necessary action will be initiated for allotment of the plot and construction of the school, with requisite formalities being pursued simultaneously to avoid delays,” said the official.According to the letter of the activist, Ashok Agarwal, the issue has remained under consideration by several authorities, including MCD, DDA and Delhi govt, with several representations submitted over the years. It states that a representation was submitted in Sept 2023 seeking allotment of DDA land for the proposed school. According to the letter, the matter was subsequently pursued by MCD’s education department, which sought allotment of land from DDA in Oct 2025 and again in Jan 2026.There was no immediate response from DDA.Referring to the continued delay, Agarwal’s letter states, “However, despite repeated representations, official recommendations and continuous inter-departmental correspondence spanning almost three years, no final decision has been taken and the proposed school has not yet been established.”The representation cites certificates from neighbouring municipal schools to underline the demand. It says records show groups of approximately 123, 86 and 58 students, besides other children from Prem Nagar, are studying in different schools in neighbouring areas “solely because no primary school exists within Ward No. 38.”The existing govt school that caters to Prem Nagar and surrounding localities has limited primary section seats, the letter states.Calling for early action, Agarwal has sought a joint meeting of the departments concerned to resolve pending administrative issues and a clear timeline for commencement of construction. The letter also raises safety concerns over children travelling outside the locality.
