Daltonganj: A 22-year-old woman died hours after undergoing a Caesarean section to remove a dead foetus at a private hospital in Daltonganj late Wednesday, triggering allegations of medical negligence. Officials have sealed the hospital and registered a criminal case against the hospital management.The deceased has been identified as Hasbun Khatoon, a resident of Checha village under Barwadeeh block in Latehar district.Health officials said that the hospital is registered under the Clinical Establishments Act till February 2027, with Dr Avinash Kumar Tarwey listed as the person in-charge.Khatoon was admitted to the hospital on May 5 after an ultrasonography report confirmed intra-uterine foetal death, with loss of heartbeat. A doctor performed the C-section on her around 8 pm on the same day. Khatoon remained conscious until noon the next day, the family members of the deceased claimed.Quoting family members of the deceased, civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar Sriwastwa said, “The woman’s condition deteriorated rapidly later in the day. She became disoriented, her oxygen saturation fell dangerously and despite being given medical oxygen, she could not be stabilised.”Claiming that the death did not occur inside the same hospital, officials added that the hospital authorities decided to shift her to a multi-speciality hospital in Nawa Toli, Daltonganj, when her condition worsened but she died on the way. The woman’s relatives, however, brought her body back to the hospital and protested, demanded an inquiry. Amid the escalating tension, the hospital staff fled the premises late at night.Taking cognizance, deputy commissioner DC Dilip Pratap Singh Shekhawat, SP Kapil Chaudhary, Sadar SDO Sulochana Meena, and Dr Sriwastwa visited the hospital on Wednesday and found it deserted.The DC ordered sealing of the hospital and sought a detailed report, including the identity of the visiting surgeon, who conducted the operation.
