Navi Mumbai: Two workers died after a steel beam being lifted by a tower crane operator fell on them due to snapping of the wire rope at the construction site of Raheja Mindspace IT Park campus along Patni Road in Airoli Sector 20 on Monday afternoon.Rabale police had initially registered an accidental death report. But after investigating the incident, an FIR was registered against tower crane operator Keshav Nishad (34), site supervisor Rupesh Shirsat, and the management staff and authorities of VRB LLP and Gigaplex Estate Pvt Ltd for causing death by a negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide. The deceased workers — Bobby Roy (41) from Bihar and Rahul Mishra (34) from Uttar Pradesh — were engaged in civil work on the ground floor of Raheja building tower number 7. The incident took place around 12.30pm, when the steel beam being lifted by the tower crane operator reached the sixth floor and the wire rope abruptly snapped. The beam fell on the two workers standing on the ground floor and they suffered fatal injuries, said police sub-inspector Ajay Lotake. Roy and Mishra were rushed to the civic hospital at Kalwa, but were declared brought dead. While probing the accidental death case, police obtained the CCTV footage from the site and recorded the statements of other workers and security staff. It was concluded that the tower crane was operated carelessly without moving the workers to a safe distance from the potential fall zone/dangerous area of the suspended load and without installing any barricades or creating exclusion zones. “Hence, the accused persons have been held responsible for allegedly ignoring the safety rules and acting negligently that caused the death of two workers,” said Rabale police senior inspector Balkrushna Patil.“As per the provision of the law, the accused have not been arrested, but served with a notice under Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita directing them to cooperate in police investigation when summoned for production in court during trial,” Patil added.
