Jamshedpur: Rain over the past two weeks have battered city roads, leaving potholes, waterlogging, sludge and mud on stretches and making commuting difficult and hazardous. The worst-hit stretches include the road near MGMMCH in Dimna, Old Court Road in Sakchi, GT Hostel Road linking Ramdas Bhatta with Bistupur-Kadma main road, Marine Drive, and Dobo-Kanderbera road connecting Domuhani with NH-33 via Dobo overbridge in Chandil.“Travelling to MGM Hospital has become a problem for patients because of the poor condition of the road. The parking area is also waterlogged and muddy, forcing motorists to park their vehicles along the roadside,” said auto-rickshaw driver Ajay Mahato, who frequently ferries patients to the hospital.Marine Drive, the 11-km four-lane road along Subernarekha river connecting Adityapur industrial area with NH-33, is among the worst affected. Craters and potholes are troubling heavy vehicles, cars and two-wheelers.“If the potholes are not repaired at the earliest, there is a risk of a major accident as goods-laden trucks, trailers and tankers frequently travel along Marine Drive at high speed,” said Sanjay Singh, a truck owner and Ramnagar resident. He said vehicles are also suffering punctures. On 8-km Dobo-Kanderbera road, potholes, silt and sludge on the bridge have forced motorists to slow down. Water-filled potholes increase the risk of breakdowns, said transporter Akhilesh Singh. The danger was underscored by the Aug 16 death of 18-year-old Bhuiyadih resident Ayush Kumar, who died after an unidentified car ran over him when he fell into a waterlogged pothole on Mango Chota Pul while riding his motorcycle.Tata Steel Utility and Infrastructure Services Ltd has begun repairs at several locations. After a JD(U) representation, company officials surveyed Ramnagar, Marine Drive and Bhetia Park on Aug 19. Road construction department officials said repairs would follow as rain subsides.
